Vijayawada: In a major move towards enhancing energy security in the state, the state government on Thursday issued orders (GO No. 89) setting up energy conservation cells in all state and district level offices.

Andhra Pradesh is the first state in the country to take a decision on involving each and every department in the energy conservation and energy efficiency movement.

Chief secretary Nilam Sawhney, who is also the chairman of AP State Energy Conservation Mission, said that energy is a key source of economic growth and most important input for economic development. The use of energy drives economic productivity and industrial growth and is central to the operation of any modern economy.

As per the estimate of Bureau of Energy Efficiency, an agency of Union Ministry of Power, and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission, there is scope to save about 25 percent of energy (16000 MU) against the state’s annual energy requirement of about 64,000 MU.

The state government directed that all heads of departments (HODs), all district collectors and all chairpersons of corporations and societies to take necessary action to constitute energy conservation (EC) cells utilizing their existing staff, within one month.
