Coal India has launched a scheme that will allow its high-performing executives to obtain a one-year degree in management from Indian Management Institutes in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Indore, with the goal of engaging in private competition.

The organization will cover the expenses, including the stay of the hostel, and will continue to offer wages and benefits to selected executives.

In view of competition, the company executive said that the scheme was necessary. “The length of the course would be regarded as ‘on duty’ and seniority and consideration for promotion will be covered,” the Executive said.

He said many professionals are from technical backgrounds. “The initiative will create future managers with an ideal blend of technical and managerial skills,” he said.

For example, 16 executives a year will be chosen for the program, two from each of the seven coal-producing subsidiaries and one from its exploration arm, the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute and its headquarters.

The scheme is targeted at mid-level executives in grades E-4 to E-6 with a total of five years of service in Coal India and a total of 10 years of service left over for over-annuation.

“They are to have an ‘outstanding’ score in their performance in four of the previous five years,” he said.
