Due to Corona crisis this year, there is less possibility of increase in electricity rates in Himachal Pradesh. Before the rationalization of subsidy last year, electricity has become expensive. Now the idea of increasing the security amount is also going on. In such a situation, the possibility of imposing additional financial burden on the consumers is also less in the time of this crisis. In the online public hearing held recently, representatives of all sections have demanded not to increase the rates. In such a situation, it is possible that after 16 May, people will get relief news to the Electricity Regulatory Commission. The commission office has been closed till May 16 due to the Corona curfew. For the consumers of 21.48 lakh domestic and 4.18 lakh other categories of the state, the Electricity Board has sent a proposal to increase the electricity rates. Citing a loss of Rs 251 crore, the Electricity Board has filed a petition in the Regulatory Commission to increase the rates.
In the Corona crisis, the regulatory commission did not raise electricity rates in the year 2020. The government had reduced the amount of subsidy given to the board in mid-year by taking a decision in the cabinet meeting. With this decision of the government, subsidy has been fixed on the slab of electricity rates. Subsidies are being reduced by moving to a rising slab. This new system has increased the electricity bills of the consumers from about fifty rupees to 350 rupees per month. Apart from this, now the security amount of electricity meters of different categories of consumers is going to change. The old connection holders will be reviewed after one year and the new one after six to nine months. The security amount will be decided on the basis of the average bill of the consumers. The security amount will not be increased until there is a difference of less than Rs 500 between the security amount and the average electricity bill. If the difference is more than this, the amount will be increased.
