Thrissur: Upto 18 percent penalty will be levied from consumers who leave arrears in electricity bill during the pandemic times. However, the electricity board will not cut off their connections. Penalty will be levied in all bills dated June 20 and after, if the payment is not made in time.

Even though authorities claimed that surcharge will not be levied on the bills dated from April 19 to June 20, there is still confusion over that. There have been complaints that those who paid a portion of the bill online without choosing the instalment option had to pay the extra surcharge. KSEB consumer service centre also stated that consumers have time till December to pay the bills dated between April 19 and June 20.

Electricity board decided not to levy extra money from the consumers due to the pandemic. However, if the deposit money falls short, it will be extracted from the bill after determining the rate of interest for the deposit.

Applications for new connections can be given online

Online applications can be given for securing new electricity connections. There is no need to pay the application fee as well. Earlier, Rs 61 was charged from LT consumers, including flood cess and GST, Rs 1118 from High Tension (HT) consumers and Rs 5,500 was charged from Extra High Tension customers as application fees. Also, consumers paying the bill online will also get a discount of up to 5 percent of the total bill.
