New Delhi, August 11: In the April-June period of the current financial year, the allocation of fuel to Coal India under the exclusive e-auction scheme for the non-power sector increased three-fold to 6.66 million tonnes (MT). This growth comes in the midst of Coal India (CIL) seeking to tap the non-power sector in the wake of a drop in demand for dry fuel for its coal consumption.

In the April-June period of the last financial year, CIL had allocated 2,20 MT of the dry fuel to the sector under the scheme, according to the latest government data. However, in the last month, the coal quantity allocated by the maharatna firm under the scheme fell to 0.56 MT, from one million tons allocated in June 2019-20, the data showed. As per the data, the PSU ‘s coal allocation under the scheme dropped from 11.36 MT in the previous year to 8.03 MT for the entire fiscal year (2019-20).

The scheme to make coal available to non-power consumers, including captive power plants, was launched in 2015-16. CIL, which has enough coal stock, is grappling with low demand for the dry fuel.
