Coal output for Illinois Basin total 19.2 million st; lowest on available data: MSHA

Illinois Basin coal production amounted to more than 19.2 million sts in the first quarter of 2020, down 7.3 percent from the previous quarter and down 30.7 percent from the previous year, according to data from the Mine Health and Safety Administration in May.

This was the fourth consecutive week on a weekly and year-on-year decline in four quarters.

The Alliance Resource Partners River View mine in Kentucky was the top producer in the basin with a total output of over 2.8 million st, up 3.2 percent from the previous quarter, but down 7.2 percent year on year.

Foresight Energy's Illinois-based MC#1 mine followed at 2.3 million , down 5.8 percent from Q4 2019 and down 40.6 percent from the previous quarter.

The Prairie State Lively Grove mine in Illinois produced 1.8 million sts over the quarter , up 15.3 percent from the previous quarter and up 3.2 percent year on year.

On a company-based basis, Alliance Mines produced approximately 5.4 million sts in Q1, down 12.9 percent quarter-on - quarter and down 36.3 percent from last year's quarter. Alliance output was at its lowest since S&P Global Platts began collecting data in 2014.

Peabody 's production was approximately 3.3 million st in the first quarter , down 9.1 percent from Q4 2019 and down 26.9 percent from Q1 2019. Peabody production has also been at its lowest since Platts began collecting data.
Arch Coal production in the Illinois Basin amounted to almost 292,024 sts in the quarter , down 9.1 percent from the previous quarter and down 36.3 percent from the previous quarter.

By state, Illinois Mines produced 8.8 million sts in Q1, down 1.9 percent from Q4 and down 32.1 percent from the previous quarter.

Indiana produced almost 5.8 million sts in the first quarter , down 14.8 percent from the previous quarter and down 34.2 percent from Q1 2019.

Kentucky 's production was 4.7 million, down 6.6 percent from the previous quarter and down 23.1 percent year-on-year.
