New Delhi, August 18: Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi reviewed Talcher Fertilizers Ltd’s progress in its operational activities and asked it to accelerate the coal gasification project. Talcher Fertilizers Ltd is a joint venture between GAIL India Ltd, Coal India Ltd, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd and Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd (FCIL).
“Took stock of progress made in operation activities, by Talcher Fertilizers Limited. Advised them to expedite the coal gasification project and assured them of support from the ministry,” Joshi said in a tweet.
The coal-gasification ammonia-urea plant, a first of its kind in the world, would have a design capacity of 2,200 tons of ammonia per day and 3,850 tons of urea per day, the government had said earlier.
As a saleable by-product, the state-of-the-art plant at Odisha will produce 100 tonnes per day of sulphur flakes.
The plant will generate 2.38 million tons of synthesis gas from coal equivalent to natural gas every day, the government said.
In March 1999 the plant previously operated by FCIL stopped production. Talcher Fertilizers Ltd is now relaunching its operations.
The promoters of TFL have spent Rs 8,000 crore on various contracts awarded so far, the government had said earlier.
The project will have an output of 1.27 million metric tons of ‘Neem’-coated urea per annum using a blend of indigenous coal and pet coke as feedstock.
It is expected that up to 10,000 people will be employed during the construction period, and that more than 4,000 direct and indirect job opportunities will open once the plant starts operations.
